Car
Insurance Legal Requirement:
Off Road
Make
sure you don't find yourself on the wrong side of the law: These
are some of the legal requirements you should be aware of:
Registration
Certificate issued by the DVLA: When you buy a car, you
must advise the DVLA that you are the new legal owner by sending
off the Registration Certificate issued by the DVLA (also known
as a log book). Your UK car insurance (for women or men) will
only be valid if you have transferred ownership. NEVER BUY A CAR
WITHOUT THE LOG BOOK. It may be stolen and if repossessed at a
future date you would have no chance of getting your money back.
You should look after your log book when you buy a new car - and
never leave it in the car!
MOT: You are legally required to get an MOT if
your car is 3 years old or older. The MOT must be renewed every
year.
Insurance: UK car insurance for women and men
has been compulsory since 1930. Women's car insurance in the UK
is now generally cheaper than men's because we are less likely
to have accidents.
Tax: You must have valid road tax on your car
to meet legal requirements. For women (and men) who have
cars off the road, tax can be waived and even reclaimed, but only
if the car is not on the public highway. Cars built before 01/01/1973
are exempt from road tax.
Driving licence: You must hold a valid driving
licence to get UK car insurance. For drivers under 70, photocard
licences need to be renewed every 10 years; drivers over 70 must
renew their licences every 3 years.
INTERESTING
FACT: Driving without insurance carries a maximum sentence
of £5,000 fine, unlimited disqualification or six to eight
penalty points. Driving without a valid MOT carries a maximum
sentence of £1,000 fine.
